Al was born in 1967 in the West of England and came to Australia with her husband in 1998, settling in Alice Springs in 2000. After completing a BA and a PhD in English Literature, some Uni lecturing and a stint in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, she found her niche in school teaching, which she has pursued in a range of situations for the last fifteen years or so. She currently teaches English and Media Studies and manages the Arts and Humanities Faculty at the local senior college.
She gave up art as a school subject when she was 13 and her formal training since then has been confined to occasional workshops. Al didn’t start to paint until coming to Australia and, after a short period working with acrylics, quickly moved to oils, her favourite medium. She has recently enjoyed experimenting with pastels, mixed media and sculpture, particularly for portraiture and figure studies.
